The submachine was developed by a team of designers (R. Stadler, George Hyde from Fire**** Research Corporation and engineer Frederick Simson from the Inland Manufacturing Division of General Motors Corporation) as a cheaper and more technologically advanced weapon to replace the Thompson submachine .
